Triathlete magazine is the largest newsstand publication covering the sport of triathlon. The editorial focus is placed on multisport training tips and programs, nutrition articles, gear and apparel guides, athlete profiles, triathlon-related travel stories and timely news pieces relating to the triathlon lifestyle. Full-length features generally range from 800 to 1,200 words. Payment for editorial is made upon publication.
Trail Runner magazine
Trail Runner is the country’s leading magazine for off-road running enthusiasts. Articles inspire readers to enjoy the outdoors and to improve their health and fitness through the sport of trail running. Feature articles cover a gamut of topics, including personality profiles, top trail-running destinations, race profiles/reports and issues in our sport, and generally run 2000 to 3000 words (and include a short sidebar or two). Features: 2K-3K words/feature articles; Long Departments: 1K-1200 words; Service Departments: 800-1000 words. Payment: 25 cents/word.
Sports Spectrum magazine
Sports Spectrum magazine is intended to allow Christian athletes to tell how their faith and their knowledge of God’s Word help them as they face difficult issues. These articles generally run from 1,500 to 2,000 words plus one or two sidebars, which run generally 150 words. Payment is made according to assigned word count. Payment is 21 cents/word.
Sports Collectors Digest
Sports Collectors Digest is the hobby’s oldest and largest publication, covering every aspect of modern sports collecting including cards, memorabilia, lithographs, autographed material and more. Payment for articles is based on a per-story basis (story plus illustrative material) at the editor’s discretion. Payment is upon publication, unless other arrangements have been agreed upon.
Sports Afield magazine
Sports Afield is America’s original outdoor magazine, founded in 1887. The magazine is devoted to people who share a passion for high-end sporting pursuits, especially North American and African big-game hunting. Word length: under 2500 words/feature article; and 300-400 words per short article. These items include Safari Basics, Personalities Afield, Hunting Tech, Shooting Tips, and Conservation Corner. Payment: $500-$800/article issued upon publication.
Snowshoe Magazine
Snowshoe Magazine celebrates the sport of snowshoeing and those who participate in the sport. The magazine’s articles focus on: Profiles, destinations, health/fitness, snowshoe race coverage, advocacy for the protection of the environment and much more. Features are generally 1,000 to 2,000 words in length, and require in-depth research, quotes and talented writing. Snowshoe Magazine pays for all submissions.
Only A Game magazine
An award-winning weekly sports magazine hosted by veteran NPR commentator Bill Littlefield, Only A Game is radio for the serious sports fan and the steadfast sports avoider. Produced by WBUR in Boston, Only A Game puts sports in perspective with intelligent analysis, insightful interviews, and a keen sense humor. Pays: $100 per minute of produced piece; $400 for shorter pieces.
Shotgun Sports magazine
Writers for Shotgun Sports should have first-hand knowledge of hunting, trapshooting, skeet, sporting clays or hunting or be knowledgeable in other areas of shotgunning, such as collecting, repairing or reloading. Length: 1,500-2,000. Payment ranges from $50 to $200. The magazine pays upon publication.
Runner’s World magazine
Runner’s World provides runners at all levels with the most up-to-date information on training, nutrition, injury prevention, sports psychology and total fitness. These departments offer the best opportunities for freelancers: “What it takes to…”, “Rave Run” and “Life & Times.” It’s not necessary to query when contributing to these sections of the magazine; all submissions are on speculation. Payment: up to $300/department and up to $2,000/feature article. Rates are negotiated.
POWDER, the Skier’s magazine
POWDER is written by and for advanced skiers. Our mission is to come as close as possible to the expert skiing experience through words, photos, graphics, and humor. Average feature length is 2,000 words. POWDER is always looking for profiles of interesting people, sponsored and unsponsored alike, that have an interesting story on and off the slopes. Contract will be issued with assignment.
