DIG Magazine
DIG focuses on archaeology – recent discoveries, techniques used in the field and in the laboratory, archaeologists past and present, innovative ‘dig’ programs for our age audience (8- to 14-year-olds), rethinking of popular theories, and creative activities that entertain as well as inform. Feature articles include in-depth nonfiction, plays, and biographies. Word length: 750900 words. Fiction includes authentic historical and biographical fiction, adventure, and retold legends relating to the theme. Word length: 7501000 words. Activities include crafts, recipes, woodworking, or any other interesting projects that can be done either by children alone or with adult supervision. Sketches and description of how activity relates to theme should accompany queries. Word length: up to 700 words. Pays 20 to 25 cents per printed word.
Alabama Heritage magazine
Alabama Heritage is the nonprofit publication of the University of Alabama. Published quarterly, the editors seek articles that show connections between the past and the present, between Alabama and the rest of the world. Alabama Heritage publishes articles on local, state, and regional history, art, literature, language, archeology, music, religion, architecture, and natural history. Word length: 2,000-4,500/feature article; and 250-1200 words/short piece. Alabama Heritage purchases articles on a “work-for-hire” basis.
American Spirit magazine
The magazine’s focus is on Early American history; genealogy; civics education; historic preservation; collectibles such as furniture, porcelain, textiles, tools and artwork; womens history and biography; historic travel and tourism; patriotism; Americana and crafts. Non-fiction features average 1,5002,000 words; non-fiction departments average 750-1,000 words. The editors purchase first North American periodical rights of submitted materials.
ARCHAEOLOGY magazine
ARCHAEOLOGY magazine examines the discipline of archaeology through the lens of the discipline of journalism. Reporting can focus on a particular site, on a new discovery, or may be an investigation of the reevaluation or overturning of a long-held theory. A significant portion of the magazine’s content is contributed by freelancers. Writers are invited to submit proposals. Word length: up to 3K words. Pays up to $2,000/feature article.
Canada’s History magazine (Canada)
Canada’s History magazine publishes well-written, well-researched, and informative articles about Canadian history that focus on all parts of the country and all areas of human activity. Articles run various lengths: long features (from 1500 to 3000 words) that provide an in-depth look at an event, person, or era; short features (from 600 to 1200 words) that provide a more narrow focus. Pays up to 50 cents/word for feature articles.
Chronicle magazine
Chronicle is the membership publication of the Historical Society of Michigan. HSMx, the state’s oldest cultural organization, helps to connect Michigan’s past Manuscripts should range in length from 1,500 to 3,000 words. Topics for feature articles should be of local or regional importance. Payment: $50-$75/article.
Early American Life magazine
Early American Life is a bi-monthly magazine focusing on period antiques and homes as well as reproduction furnishings and homes, traditional craftsmanship, architectural details, and travel to historic sites. Rates depend on your skill and our relationship. Payment for unsolicited manuscripts will be negotiated upon acceptance. Payment is around $500 for a first feature from a new writer, more if you are an experienced, skillful writer.
Good Old Days magazine
Good Old Days tells the real stories of the people who lived and grew up in “the Good Old Days” (about 1935-1960). The editors look for real stories; happy, sad, the good, the bad. Humor is always a plus. If your article is accepted for publication, you will receive a contract agreement with a payment offer and information as to what issue of the magazine your article will appear. Payment is $15-$50, depending on quality and photos.
History Magazine
History Magazine brings readers thrilling stories of exploration, invention, innovation and conflict. In each issue readers learn about the development of government, medicine, technology, trade, the arts and the art of war. Article length: article length is 2,000 to 3,000 words. Payment is 8 cents per word and $7 for each photo or image.
Persimmon Hill magazine
