The magazine and website are for all breeds, interests, and disciplines, and cover a wide variety of topics. Word length: 1500-1800 words for a feature or 300-600 words for a short piece or blog. Payment is negotiated with the writer.

EQUUS magazine is a horse health publication for laymen, featuring articles on health care, behavior, training techniques, veterinary breakthroughs and exercise physiology. The editors will consider publishing any worthwhile submission on horse-related topics. Word length: 1600-3000 words. Payment: depends on quality, length and complexity of the story.

Hoof Beats is about 70percent freelance written, and we are always looking for new and exciting story ideas pertaining exclusively to Standardbreds and harness racing. Horse Illustrated is for hands-on horse owners and riders of English and western disciplines. The magazine promotes responsible horse ownership, from providing tips to owners on better horse care and training, to alerting horse lovers about pertinent issues in the equine community. Word length: up to 2K words. Payment: up to $475/article.

Horse-Canada magazine is a general interest magazine that appeals to owners, riders and drivers of all breeds and disciplines. Word length: 750-1,500 words, unless otherwise specified by the editor. Rates for freelance material are to be discussed and settled prior to publications.

Practical Horseman magazine is for the serious amateur English rider. The editors published detailed interviews with experts in the sport, one-page columns, how-to pieces, and short columns (under 500 words). Payment: TBD.

The Chronicle of the Horse focuses primarily on dressage, hunters and jumpers, eventing, foxhunting and steeplechase racing. The magazine also features articles on horse care and profiles of prominent horse people. Word length: 1500 words for news stories; 1500-2500 words for feature articles. Payment: $165-$220 for news stories; $150-$250 for feature articles; and $30-$50 per photo.

Every month, the Equine Journal presents feature articles and columns spanning the length and breadth of horse-related activities and interests from all corners of the country. The Equine Journal welcomes freelance submissions and queries from freelance writers. Feature articles are generally between 1,200 to 1,800 words. Equine Journal buys first North American Serial Rights for feature articles, along with general web rights, and pays upon publishing.

The Horse is a monthly magazine devoted to equine health care. The publication focuses on educational topics and news and is geared towards the professional, hands-on horse owner. The Horse prefers “how-to topics,” technical topics, and topical interviews. Articles range from short news items at 250 words to 1800 word cover stories; payments vary depending on length of article. The Horse pays on acceptance.
