Queen’s Quarterly magazine (Canada)
Queen’s Quarterly is a multidisciplinary journal aimed at the general educated reader. The editor accepts unpublished articles, essays, reviews, short stories and poetry. For poetry and fiction, submit up to six poems or two stories. Articles, essays, and reviews should be sent to the editor and should not exceed 3000 words in length. Payment will be determined at time of acceptance and paid upon publication.
The Antigonish Review
TAR is open to poetry on any subject written from any point of view and in any form. Fiction can be 500 to 3,000 words. Most of the essays we publish run from 1000 to 4000 words. The Antigonish Review invites reviews of recent Canadian poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Pays up to $50/poem; $50/fiction story; $50/article; and $50/book review.
The American Scholar
The American Scholar is a magazine of articles and essays covering the humanities, science, and current events, plus works of fiction and poetry. Published quarterly for the general reader by the Phi Beta Kappa Society, the Scholar considers nonfiction by known and unknown writers; unsolicited fiction and poetry are not encouraged. The typical Scholar article is about 4,000 words, although longer and shorter pieces are welcome. Contributors need not be scholars. Payment: up to $500 for accepted pieces and up to $250 for pieces taken only for its website, theamericanscholar.org.
SubTerrain magazine (Canada)
subTerrain magazine is published 3 times a year. The editors strive to produce a stimulating fusion of fiction, poetry, photography and graphic illustration from uprising Canadian, U.S. & International writers and artists. Payment rates for published submissions: Poetry: $50 per poem. Prose: $50 per page.
StoryQuarterly magazine
Founded in 1975, StoryQuarterly has been publishing emerging and established writers for over 30 years. The editor is interested in literary fiction, including short stories, short shorts, and novel excerpts up to 6,250 words in length. Payment is $50 per story.
Slice magazine
Slice magazine welcomes submissions for short fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Current reading period runs from June 1 – August 1. The maximum word count for submissions is 5,000 words. Pays $100 for stories and essays and $25 for poems.
Ricepaper magazine (Canada)
Showcasing work by prominent as well as emerging Asian Canadian writers, Ricepaper magazine seeks superlative unpublished literary content for our upcoming issues. Fiction, creative non-fiction, drama and graphic novel should be of 6,000 words or less in length. Poetry submissions can contain up to 7 poems. Payment is determined by the Editor.
Rhubarb magazine (Canada)
Rhubarb magazine is looking for new, unpublished work from writers and artists who self-define as Mennonites, whether practicing, declined, lapsed or resistant; we also accept writing and visual art by non-Mennonites about Mennonites. Writing should be clear, stimulating and persuasive without being didactic. Payment is $50.00 upon publication.
Quill & Quire magazine
Quill & Quire is the monthly magazine of the Canadian book trade, reaching an audience of primarily publishers, booksellers, librarians, and writers. We publish both short (300- to 1,200-word) and long (up to 3,000-word) news and feature articles about the business of writing, publishing, and bookselling in Canada. We also publish author profiles (generally of about 1,800 to 2,000 words), and brief reviews of Canadian books. The fee for published articles is 45 cents a word. Brief reviews (350 words) pay $110 ($60 for picture-book reviews); feature reviews (800-1,000 words) pay $300.
The Antioch Review
The Antioch Review, founded in 1941, is one of the oldest, continuously publishing literary magazines in America. We publish fiction, essays, and poetry from both emerging as well as established authors. Welcomes fiction, poetry, and reviews. Payment is upon printed publication at the rate of $20.00 per printed page (about 425 words) plus 2 copies of the issue.
