Journalists Need the Opportunity to Work Happy
Posted on: Sun, 23 Mar 2008 17:41:00 +0000

WorkHappyNow.com published an article, "Journalism Needs a Work Happy Make-Over," in response to Duct Tape Marketing's blog "Will Social and Journalism Ever Work Together?" The author believes that working happy should be one of management's top priorities at all the major media outlets.

"While all are dabbling in new media (meaning some are blogging) few are able to embrace the full leverage of the social tools available. Some of this is due to a lack of information in an "old school" mindset, but a great deal of is due to the fact that journalists are being asked to embrace these new tools (without a raise in pay) and do so under the umbrella of the paper's CPM ad model. In other words, go blog, we won't give you the tools or support to actually do it well, we won't give you a reason to have a voice and enthusiasm for building a conversation, and, by the way, here's your page view quota." - John Jantsch of Duct Tape Marketing

People read about how working happy helps businesses like Google, Microsoft and Southwest airlines, but they don't expect it from the media industry. Working happy should be a right for everyone, not just the select few who have enough power to demand it. The newspaper industry could really use a work happy make-over.

Instead of demanding that writers develop a blog and create a loyal readership, they should give support to make it happen. Work Happy Now! is not making a sweeping comment across all major publications, but the ones that don't give proper support. They know who they are and they should give more help to their writers for this fairly new medium.

The writers need to be compensated for their hard work if they are putting in more hours to create blog content. They could probably use more money, but working happy is not just about getting paid more; it also includes rewarding writers if they meet certain readership goals on their blog by giving them time off or use of certain perks like sporting event tickets.

Working happy is mutually beneficial to the corporation and the writer. If management can see the productive nature of giving their creative people the support that they need, the company will be rewarded with higher profits because their writing will be more engaging. More readership always brings in more money. It will take time to change the culture at these newspapers, but if they give it a try they might improve the profession of journalism and increase online readership.
