The New York Times, like the rest of the American newspaper industry, is in dire financial straits. But that hasn't stopped it from looking to the future and how news might be delivered to its audience in 10 years.
The Times' research and development team works on the 28th floor of the newspaper's midtown skyscraper, and its members are tasked with taking a big-picture view of what's coming to news. Among their bets: Readers will want news on new devices, like ereaders and netbooks, and in new outside-the-browser experiences, like Times Reader; they'll consume more news in their living rooms, on their flat-screen TVs; and they'll want easier ways to move content among their various devices, like cell phones, laptops, and televisions.
