Different Approaches To Writing For Different Readers by Marsha Maung
Posted on: Sun, 11 May 2008 14:23:00 +0000

I've read my fare share of articles, web content, stories and newsletters in my lifetime and frankly speaking, I remember very few of them. But the ones I do remember are the really good ones. Being a freelance writer, I read what others write because it is always refreshing and even though I've been freelancing as a writer for so many years, there's still quite a bit, I've discovered, to learn...even from novice writers!

Some of the more memorable articles I've read on the Internet are the funny ones. It's incredible and I am envious of how others just have this uncanny ability to write funny without putting much effort into it (then again, maybe there was, who knows?)

But funny is not the only way to write. Different types of content appeals to a different crowd, so, if you're thinking of hiring a freelance writer to do the job for you, you need to research and find out what type of people are going to be interested in your articles. Study your subjects before advising your freelance writer because he/she is going to need it when he/she is writing the articles for you.

Talking about styles of writing, let me just outline some interesting ways to write that can help your articles stand out in the word-congested net.

The EXPLOSIVE writing style

This type of article writing style will reel you in from the first word. It captures your attention, keeps you interested, drags you through the content by the hair, makes you dig around for information mid way and ends in a spectacular climax. To write this kind of article, you have to have two things. One, a good freelance writer or an EXTREMELY positive attitude when you write. Two, good advice or information.

The HA-HA writing style

I'll admit this...it's hard to write funny when you have PMS or you have a crying baby bawling in the background, so when you want to use this type of writing style, the first thing you need to do is to relax and be yourself. Find the right time to sit down and get your head together before you begin because it's incredibly hard, if not impossible, to write comically or funnily when you mood is blacker than the clouds outside.

The SERIOUS type of writing

As repetitive and boring as some people seem to think the SERIOUS WRITING STYLE is, it appeals to men and women in suits and more often than not, it works because that's what serious people are looking for. This type of article is often churned out using formal tone of voice - and leave all the fanfare for the less solemn people out there on the Internet.

The CUT TO THE CHASE type of writing style

Short. Abrupt. Packed. Intense. Direct. To-the-point. That's how you describe this type of article. If you want to know how to hide bad breath, that's what you get in the form of a the shortest web content you can imagine. I don't think it can, sometimes, be considered an article but more like a 'tip'. But I could be wrong. To write this type of article, you don't need a lot of talent except to spell and write coherently, of course but even the worst dyslexic on the planet can probably come up with the CUT TO THE CHASE type of content. I think.

So, have you decided yet? What kind of article writing style suits you and your business?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Marsha Maung is a renowned (ahem!) freelance writer who is based in Malaysia, who ghost blogs, writes web content, website copy, advert copy and SEO stuff for her clients. She's been doing this for the past 9 years and counting and is kinda wishing she didn't have to write about menopause or kayak-making for a change. She's, after all, one of the most kick-ass SEO writer in Asia for now (until someone kicks her off the chart) and loves the idea of putting food on the table...so.
