Word of mouth can be some of the best advertising that you can get, and it usually doesn't cost a thing. I make sure that everyone knows I'm a writer, because you never really know when the next person you bump into might have the need for a writer. For example, I was once approached by a local businessman who was opening up a banquet hall in a small town because he was thinking about hosting a murder mystery dinner theater and wanted original content for the production. I was also once approached by a local massage therapist (the one I visit regularly, as a matter of fact) because she wanted to start sending out a monthly newsletter to her regular customers and needed some guidance on the writing. Always consider the opportunity to talk about yourself as an opportunity to spread the word about what you do for a living. You never know when your next interesting writing job might come from someone you know.
