Simon & Schuster Signs Deal with Sean Covey

Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, has signed a deal to publish The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, the first picture book from Sean Covey in September 2008. Covey is the author of the multimillion copy best-selling The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, and The 6 Most Important Decisions You'll Ever Make: A Guide for Teens. The book will include illustrations by artist Stacy Curtis. The deal, which is for world rights, including audio, was negotiated by Rubin Pfeffer, Senior Vice-President and Publisher of Simon & Schuster Children's Trade Publishing, and Shannon Miser-Marven of Dupree/Miller & Associates.

Doubleday Canada has acquired the long-awaited new book from hockey icon Don Cherry. DON CHERRY'S HOCKEY STORIES AND STUFF, written with veteran sports journalist Al Strachan, will arrive in bookstores across Canada in late October, 2008.

Paramount Pictures has purchased the screen rights to the current New York Times non-fiction bestsellers Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction by David Sheff and Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines by Nic Sheff, for development and feature film production by Plan B.
The critically lauded Beautiful Boy, published by Houghton Mifflin Co., chronicles the teenage Nic Sheff's descent into methamphetamine abuse from the point of view of his father, journalist David Sheff, as he struggles to help his son overcome addiction. Quercus Publishing Plc, the PLUS-quoted publishing company, announced outstanding sales of overseas territorial rights in two of its recent acquisitions, Journal of Helene Berr and Genesis.
After a fierce auction between six different publishing houses, Weinstein Books bought the US rights to 'Journal of Helene Berr' from Quercus. The book is an uplifting journal of an intelligent and courageous young woman, Helene Berr, in occupied Paris. Helene was a student of English Literature at the Sorbonne in Paris. She was deported to Auschwitz in 1944 with her mother and father, and she died in Bergen-Belsen in April 1945, just a few weeks before the liberation of the camp. DreamWorks Studios Options Rights to Atlantis Rising

DreamWorks Studios has optioned the rights to make a feature film from Platinum Studios Inc.'s comic book "Atlantis Rising."
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who brought the project to the studio, will produce through their DreamWorks based company. Platinum Studios' Chairman and CEO, Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, will also produce. The Greenberg Group CEO and former Universal Pictures senior executive Randy Greenberg will executive produce and Platinum Studios' Rich Marincic will co-produce.
Created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, "Atlantis Rising" is a five-part mini series first published by Platinum Studios Comics in November of 2007. The fifth and final installment in the series is due on comic book shelves in late April 2008.

HarperCollins Publishers has acquired world rights to The Happiest Hippo in the World, a children's picture book by international bestselling author Danielle Steel. The new book, by the author of 88 adult novels, including Honor Thyself, Sisters, and the "Max and Martha" series for children, tells the story of a baby hippo who happens to be born green instead of gray and learns with the help of a little boy to love himself despite being different. Both delightful and heartwarming, the book was written by Ms. Steel for her son Nicholas Traina when he was little and is expected to be published in Fall 2009. Illustrations will be by celebrated artist Margaret Spengler.

The Weinstein Company has acquired the rights to develop, produce and distribute the first ever biopic about the legendary Jamaican singer, songwriter, guitarist, and activist, Bob Marley and his wife Rita Marley. The feature film will be based on the autobiography "No Woman No Cry: My Life With Bob Marley" written by Rita Marley, the widow of the legendary reggae musician. The book is an intimate and epic account of their relationship, which went from the streets of Trenchtown to the heights of the international music and political worlds. Rudy Langlais ("The Hurricane") is set to produce the film from a script written by Lizzie Borden ("Working Girls"). Rita Marley will serve as executive producer.

CBS Films and Simon & Schuster/Atria Books -- both divisions of CBS Corporation -- have reached film and publishing agreements with best-selling author Vince Flynn for upcoming projects.
