1. NY Post Media Ink: NO PEOPLE AT WAL-MART By Keith J. Kelly February 4, 2009
http://www.nypost.com/seven/02042009/business/
CHAOS from the ongoing maga zine wholesaler war has officially arrived, and it looks likely that many celebrity weeklies won't be heading to
many local Wal-Marts this week. Wal-Mart, the single-biggest magazine retailer in the country, will be without copies of People, Sports Illustrated and
Time. They will also not have Bauer Publications' In Touch and Life & Style, and American Media-owned Star and National Enquirer.
While it's too early to know how many of Wal-Mart's 4,200 US stores will be affected, it appears a majority of them will be. A Wal-Mart
spokeswoman confirmed that some stores are expected to be without magazines this week, but did not offer specifics on the titles or how many stores
will be affected.
At the heart of the mess is a standoff between magazine publishers and two of the country's largest wholesalers, Anderson News and Source
Interlink Cos., both of which on Sunday began imposing a 7-cent surcharge on every copy they deliver to retailers.

2. NY Post PAGE SIX: More Mags Face the Ax? By Richard Johnson February 4, 2009
http://www.nypost.com/seven/02042009/gossip/pagesix/more_mag
THE tough times for the magazine industry are about to get worse. On the heels of Conde Nast closing Domino, insiders say Si Newhouse is
thinking of shuttering Allure. "It's a shame," the insider said.
"Allure is great and isn't a succubus on the budget like Portfolio. But Si's ego is tied up in Portfolio." Meanwhile, we hear Richard Desmond's
OK! might close in six months. "[Former general manager] Kent Brownridge really did a number on that magazine while he was there," said another
spy.
"The losses were so substantial that Desmond is bringing in a bunch of Brits to see it through the summer, but now that the British pound isn't
as strong, he's losing money hand over fist and isn't going to put up with it for long. OK! is doomed." Reps for Allure and OK! denied their bad
prospects.
3. WWD MEMO PAD: Moving Day By S.D.S. February 4, 2009
http://www.wwd.com/media-news/fashion-memopad/giorgios-new-man-if-you-charge
So much for all that speculation about Details. Cond? Nast executives gave the magazine a vote of confidence Tuesday when staffers were
informed they would move into new digs at 4 Times Square.
Though plans have not been finalized, Details is expected to vacate its 750 Third Avenue offices (also home to WWD) to move into Domino?s
old space by the beginning of March. The Golf Digest Group is also leaving the East Side Cond? offices to move into 4 Times Square, expected to
take over Men?s Vogue?s former space.
4. Mediaweek Mag Wholesaler Denies it Will Exit Business By Lucia Moses February 3, 2009
http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/content_display/news/magazines-newspapers
Source Interlink Cos. denied a news report that it is shutting down its magazine wholesaler business, while firing back at publishers that balked
at wholesalers? demands for higher fees. Source and Anderson News Co., which handle an estimated 50 percent of the magazine industry?s U.S.
single-copy sales, demanded in January that publishers fork over an extra 7 cents per copy to deliver magazines to the nation?s retailers. It?s
estimated that the fees would cost the publishing industry more than $150 million annually.
Time Inc. and Bauer Publishing, parent of In Touch and Life & Style, moved to stop delivering product to those wholesalers rather than pay
the fee. Comag Marketing Group, which delivers for Hearst Magazines, Cond? Nast, Wenner Media and others, said it would keep working with
Source and Anderson for now.
Source president Jim Gillis said that publishers that suspended their relationships with his company Anderson would see their newsstand sales
suffer while they try to switch to competing wholesalers, presumably The News Group and Hudson News.

5. The New York Observer Off the Record: Conde Nast Seeks New Nest By John Koblin February 3, 2009
http://www.observer.com/2009/media/cond-nast-seeks-new-nest
Despite the fact that Cond? Nast is going through a period of unprecedented hardship, and despite the fact there could be more bad news
coming down the pike??Hold on to your seat this week,? said one source about potential news later this week regarding the fate of some of Cond??s
B titles?the company hasn?t quit looking for a new home.
Cond? Nast has been in the Death Star?oops! 4 Times Square?for only a decade now, but for the last year Si Newhouse has been itching to
find a way to put all of his magazines under one big shiny roof.
In the fall of 2007, he signed up with developer Douglas Durst to build a new tower over the West Side railyards?the same man who built his
home for him in Times Square?but once the M.T.A. chose Related Properties to build on the far West Side, that deal was dead in the water.
