June 5 2009 - Conference Brings Together Top Educators for Professional Development and Networking
Posted on: Sun, 24 May 2009 17:45:00 +0000

Magna Publications, the leading provider of higher education newsletters, conferences, online seminars, and online courses, today announced the schedule for the sixth annual Teaching Professor Conference. Held June 5-7 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C., The Teaching Professor Conference provides a thought-provoking and stimulating forum for both new and experienced educators to exchange information on the latest in college teaching and learning.

"One of the most gratifying features of the event is the wonderful spirit and camaraderie among faculty who are committed to sharing their knowledge with colleagues from around the country," said Maryellen Weimer, Ph.D., professor emerita Penn State Berks and editor of The Teaching Professor newsletter. "Each year hundreds of educators leave this conference inspired, energized, and ready to tackle the challenges of college teaching."

The 2009 Teaching Professor Conference kicks off June 5 with a timely opening plenary session titled Faculty Work in the 21st Century: Changes, Challenges and Opportunities, presented by Ann E. Austin, Ph.D., a professor at Michigan State University. The following two days are packed with more than 55 workshops and 17 poster sessions on a wide range of topics designed to help faculty:

increase student participation
use social media to enhance collaborative learning
engage unmotivated students
employ active learning techniques
tackle academic integrity issues
and much more.

The high-quality roster of speakers is a combination of top presenters from the 2008 Teaching Professor Conference who were invited back, and new presenters selected based on their experiences with special programs or recognized expertise in a specific instructional area of vital importance to higher education today.

"This year's call for proposals resulted in nearly 250 submissions, making it one of our most competitive selection processes to date," said MaryAnn Mlekush, conference manager, Magna Publications. "The conference is sure to help educators sharpen existing skills, generate new ideas, and learn new techniques and strategies for transforming the learning environment."

New this year to the Teaching Professor Conference is the Scholarly Work on Teaching and Learning Award. Sponsored by McGraw-Hill and Magna Publications, this award was created to recognize outstanding articles on the scholarship of teaching and learning. The winner and finalists will be announced at the conference.
