This summer, The Writers' Program at UCLA Extension presents courses on writing funny ? Online and on the UCLA Campus.
Writing the Short Humor Column (Online)
June 25 - July 30
Fee: $375
Witty. Quirky. Creative. All in 500 words or less. It's quite possibly the most fun you will ever have as a writer. Humor columns give you the chance to express your own distinct voice in a format that newspapers or magazines might actually use.
We look at how to generate ideas, strike a funny tone, write jokes--and approach editors with an eye on publication. Column writing enables you to touch on virtually any subject, including relationships, politics, sports, and entertainment.
Anything works as long as you can spin it in a humorous way. Writing in this format also builds that much needed writer's discipline since every word counts. Get in a writing (and rewriting) rhythm with your own weekly humor column. Enrollment limited to 15 students.
Howard Leff, freelance writer whose humor columns have appeared in Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Downtown News, and Chicago Tribune's RedEye. Mr. Leff, like most people, once worked as a stand-up comic.
