It doesn't matter if you are a seasoned freelance writing veteran or you're just getting started the fact is these simple and fundamental principles will improve your results. While these may seem obvious at first remember that very few people truly reach their full potential and even fewer still earn six figures and up. That being said, it is possible if you put in the effort and stick to the basics.
Write well. Create logical sentences, use correct grammar and punctuation and don't over do it. Simplicity is your friend when it comes to online content, you don't have to write a novel to get your point across. You want to sound knowledgeable but not pretentious. Use a formal style of speech and always write in 3rd person. First person is not appropriate for most web content.
Write things people care about. Make sure you branch out and offer information that people other than you will actually want to read. Your goal should be to achieve a broad appeal. To attract a diverse audience keep things on the conservative side unless you are writing opinion.
Write mostly "evergreen" topics. Freelance writers often make the mistake of jumping on the hot news story of the day but the problem with that approach is that after a few days the information becomes irrelevant. The trick is to find topics that are searched day in and day out eternally. How-to's or general knowledgebase information are great long term earners. Hot topics are good for a short term boost but the top writers always have a long term vision.
Write what you know. Choose topics that you really understand. Not only will your research time be reduced but the end product will come across as more genuine. Obviously this isn't always possible but if you have a choice search your experience and knowledge first.
Stay consistent. Write daily, don't slack and always continue to improve upon your craft. Success breeds success. The best way to stay motivated is to forge ahead no matter what. You don't have to set extreme quotas or work twenty hours a day but if you want real success as a freelance writer then you need to take it seriously.
Writing is sharing. Don't forget why we do what we do. Writing is communication, it is a way to express ideas and share information. Many times writers become desensitized to it and crank out work like a machine but over time they will burn out. Take a moment each day to be thankful for what you have and to think about your readers. What can you share with them today?
