How many of your 2009 freelance writing resolutions have you broken already? If you promised yourself that you were going to go full time this year -- or at least bring in $X dollars this as a freelance writer -- but haven't taken even the most basic steps yet, following is what you need to do to get back on track.
Freelance Writing Tip #1: Recognize the Procrastination. The first step in fixing any problem is to recognize that it exists. Many of us give up when we procrastinate; we just let our dreams and goals slip through our fingers.
Don't!
Now that you've recognized that you're procrastinating, do the following . . .
Freelance Writing Tip #2: Recommit; Refocus. Just because you got a slower start than you had hoped is no reason to just shelve your freelance writing dreams. Choose a new start date. January 1st is only one of the 365 days in a year, ya know?
Freelance Writing Tip #3: Bit-Size Chunks. The reason many people procrastinate is because the task at hand seems overwhelming. So we put it off, put it off and put it off until we can't any more, or we just decide to not do it at all.
This is your dream you're talking about here - don't just let it go. If you're working full-time for example, but you know you want to be a full-time freelance writer "someday," you're going to have to find extra time to start. Instead, take bite-sized chunks.
For example say, the week of ___, I will write three samples. The week of ___, I will research and decide on a list of services to offer clients. The week of ___, I will start building my website (or researching designers I want to hire to design my site). The week of ___, I will compose a sample email query, etc. Each step you take gets you closer and closer to your freelance writing dreams.
So, recognize, recommit and take it little by little. Before long, you'll have all the pieces in place to start your freelance writing career and get those freelance writing jobs rolling in.
